Hans-Georg Moeller: Is AI intelligent?
Moderator: Ljubiša Bojić, Institut for Philosophy and Social Theory, University of Belgrade
Host: Andrija Sagić
Are Large Language Models (LLM) like Chat GPT and algorithms really best understood in terms of artificial “intelligence,” or is this a rather unfortunate and misleading metaphor? The presentation will argue (following Elena Esposito) that LLMs have no intelligence and don’t think but, instead, communicate. At least as of now, they can be understood as a kind of “jargon machines” whose usability is rather limited.
Hans-Georg Moeller is a Professor at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Macau. He authored numerous books including Profile Yourself:
Identity after Authenticity, Genuine Pretending: On the Philosophy of the Zhuangzi (both with Paul D’Ambrosio), The Moral Fool: A Case for Amorality, and The Radical Luhmann (all with Columbia University Press). He is content creator of the YouTube philosophy channels Carefree Wandering and Philosophy in Motion.
This event is co-organized by Serbian Branch of the Millenium Project.
